About the Program
The Police Explorer Program is an opportunity for young adults between the ages of 14 and 19 to become exposed to the basics of law enforcement through volunteering. Explorers are taught by Police Officers and Police Department employees. It is a leadership program designed to prepare students to be active in the community, learn more about a law enforcement career, obtain valuable work experience, and take on more responsibility as a young adult.
Police Explorers in the City of San Leandro attend weekly meetings. They may be called upon to provide support to Police Department personnel during civic functions such as Miracle on East 14th Street, the Cherry Festival and career day events. Explorers are often called upon to assist the Police Department’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Teams as role players during training exercises. Additionally, in the summer they attend the Explorer Academy in San Diego.
